A high-level delegation led by the Hon’ble Minister of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MoIT), the Secretary of MoIT, and the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bhutan visited the ongoing Primary Drain II construction works in Thimphu on 12 May 2026.
The delegation also included the Mayor and Executive Secretary of Thimphu Thromde, along with officials from MoIT, UNDP Bhutan, and Thimphu Thromde.
The site visit covered the 3.2-kilometre stretch of Primary Drain II, extending from Sersang Primary School in Upper Motithang to the Vegetable Market (Kaja Throm) in Thimphu. During the visit, the delegation reviewed ongoing construction works, assessed implementation progress, and discussed site-level challenges and mitigation measures. The delegation further emphasized the importance of maintaining quality standards and strengthening coordination among all stakeholders involved in project implementation.
Kezang Dorji, Urban Planner at Thimphu Thromde, highlighted that upon completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance stormwater management capacity and reduce urban flood risks through climate-resilient design.
“The upgraded drainage system is designed to address future climate and urbanization challenges. By June, the works are expected to be completed,” he said.
The high-level site visit was jointly organized by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, UNDP Bhutan, and Thimphu Thromde, reaffirming the shared commitment of the Royal Government of Bhutan and UNDP to strengthening urban resilience and advancing climate adaptation infrastructure in the Thimphu–Paro region.
