More than 40 participants from the Regional Office for Infrastructure Development, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, National Housing Development Corporation Limited, Department of Human Settlement, Thimphu Thromde, and Paro Dzongkhag participated in a three-day training on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) held at the College of Science and Technology (CST) from 18 to 20 August 2026.
The training aimed to strengthen participantsโ technical understanding of NbS and their application in urban planning and infrastructure development. The sessions introduced a range of NbS approaches, including green walls, green roofs, bioswales, rain gardens and bioretention systems, wetlands, and permeable pavements.
Participants received detailed guidance on the design and implementation of selected NbS interventions, with a focus on their practical application within Bhutanโs urban context. The training also provided an opportunity for participants to discuss technical considerations, share experiences, and explore how NbS can be integrated into urban infrastructure to enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
As part of the programme, participants reviewed the NbS Manual developed by CST and provided technical comments and recommendations to further strengthen its content. The manual is intended to serve as a practical reference for planners, engineers, architects, and other practitioners, covering key technical principles, design considerations, and implementation procedures for applying NbS in Bhutan.
The training was organised by the Project Management Unit of the Enhancing Climate Resilience of the Urban Landscapes and Communities in ThimphuโParo Region of Bhutan (ECRUL) Project, in collaboration with the College of Science and Technology.
